A TikTok user, Big Daniel. LM, shared a video claiming that Gambians have started xenophobic attacks on foreign workers in the Gambia.
The video (archived here), shared days after the Central Bank released a directive ordering all commercial banks to replace non-Gambian staff with qualified Gambians immediately.
The post captioned, “Gambians GM have started xenophobic attacks on foreign workers in the Gambia.”
As of Sep. 25, 2026, the post generated 792 likes, 166 comments, and 207 shares. The video further attracted mixed reactions among other TikTok users.
Jollof Man, who questioned the claim, wrote, “Really, I’m disappointed with my country.”
Saidou Jallow, another user who believed the claim, wrote, “My brother they are trying to manipulate their failures in the ten years of governance. Shame on them.”
However, Yombeh described the claims as fake. She wrote: “Stop the fake news bro…get your facts right.”
“Brother please check before releasing information like this, you should take it down the information is wrong big man,” AB2 wrote.
Given the severity of the xenophobic statement and recent incidents of such attacks elsewhere, Info-Checked decided to set the record straight with this fact-check.
Verification
The Central Bank of the Gambia (CBG) in a circular dispatched on Sep. 16, 2024, gives directives on the employment of Gambian staff in the banking industry.

The circular highlighted the high number of non-Gambians employed by banks; in addition to recognizing expatriate staff, the bank states that it violates the provisions of the Labour Act 2023.
The directive was carried by prominent media outlets but did not capture any xenophobic attacks on foreign workers in the Gambia.

“Central Bank orders banks to replace foreign staff by year-end.” Alkamba Times headline reads.
The Standard Newspaper platform also reported the same directive given by CBG with the caption “CBG orders commercial banks to replace foreign workers with Gambians.”

Conclusion
The claim that xenophobic attacks have started on foreign workers in the Gambia is false. While the directive for the employment of Gambian staff in the banking industry was given, which is in line with the Labour Act 2023 and Guideline 9 on the expatriate staff. The claim of xenophobic attacks is false.
