The video, which was obtained by Info-Checked, is about the Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, Hamat N.K. Bah. The comments were made during the National People’s Party (NPP) grand rally in Farafenni, Upper Baddibou District, North Bank Region. In the video, he made statements that are hateful and dangerous ethnic remarks, singling out Lebanese and accusing the opposition UDP of taking only the Fulas and Wolof to the revising courts. He was flagged for hate speech and dangerous ethnic remarks.

His statements were widely condemned and heavily criticized for fanning tribal and condescending remarks by a cross-section of social media users and rights activists.

The one-hour, 55-minute, 47-second video (archived here) claims that any objection that UDP makes at the courts is that you are either a Fula or Wolof.

What exactly did “Hamat N.K. Bah” say?

Info-Checked transcribed the audio and broke it into sections.
Speaking in Wolof, Hamat N.K. Bah said:

“There is something I will tell you, UDP, listen to me very well. Are you aware of the supplementary voter registration that happened in the country not long ago? There are many tribes in the Gambia; there are two tribes that the UDP chose: Wolof and the Fula. Any objection is either you’re a Fula or Wollof. You all listen to me: go and look at all the courts, the 95 percent of all what UDP object is that you’re Wolof or Fula. Are we not part of the country? Are we foreigners? Do they forget about the Saloum Empire? Do they forget about the Niani Empire? Do they forget the Fulladu Empire? Are we not part of the country?

You’re playing with yourselves. If you give those people your vote, you will pack your belongings and leave. They are the ones who showed it; they showed it, not us. They followed us and said we are foreigners. Now, it is left to you, people. Someone who doesn’t have his cutlass and starts chopping you, any day he has it, he will cut your neck; you all be mindful.

You people working in government, the civil servants, Adama Barrow has thanked you; the Gambia government thanked you, but you should be mindful: if you give your votes to UDP, they will fire all the civil servants. The diaspora will come and take your jobs, so instead, vote for Adama Barrow. They will sack you; they will replace you with diasporans who want to come back to this country. Hold on to your jobs; Adama has thanked you. Vote for him; your relatives vote for him so that the country can go forward.

This election is not a joke; you people of Farafenni, I will tell you one thing: you have a very good “shieff”; Mustapha has knowledge, and we thank him a lot. But elders who sit and refuse to get up; the women stood up. If we vote, we will know everyone where you vote. The election doesn’t lie, and Adama is ready to work in your country. If you want someone to help you, if he needs help, you also help him. What did Adama tell you? He will build your country, but give him your votes. I have observed something: these women are the ones behind the things. Let the men get up and know that the women have got up, and come and help Adama and vote for him. What I will remind Gambians: listen to me very well; this country will never be Lebanon in the Gambia, for history.

Nobody will ever take over this country to give it to foreigners; this country will never be Lebanon. Be careful of your votes; the young people that they mislead, what they are looking for, they have it any day. What happened in Fiji is what is going to happen here. They will come and take over the country; no foreigner will run this country for us. Gambians will run their country and will never give it to foreigners. No matter what they use, whoever they use, a foreigner will not run this country.”

Why Hamat N.K. Bah’s comments are flagged as hate speech

In flagging Hamat’s statement as hate speech, we look at the following considerations from his comments.

The potential to incite citizens against foreigners in the country: singling out Lebanon in particular and non-Gambians in general could potentially incite citizens against those groups. Equally, mentioning and alleging that the Fulas and Wollofs are the only tribes the United Democratic Party (UDP) made objections to at the revising courts after the conclusion of the supplementary voter registration are divisive and dangerous ethic remarks.

Hamat’s Status: Hon. Hamat Bah is a senior government official. He is the Minister of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs. He has several followers as the standard bearer of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP). His remarks may be received by some, if not the majority of their followers, as legitimate comments. His comments came at a time when the country is a few months away from the presidential election, especially with the growing trend of misinformation, ethnic remarks, and hate speeches.

Conclusion

Hamat N.K. Bah’s comments are dangerous and hateful. His comments followed recent ethnic remarks, which have the potential to incite discrimination against individuals. As the country is heading to the polls on December 5, 2026.

According to the United Nations, hate speech is any offensive statement that targets a group or individuals based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender and has the potential to threaten social peace.

By Momodou Janneh

A video has gone viral across Facebook on Tuesday, 26 September, 2026.
